Big Ideas into actionable items.
Vision 2050 captured our community’s ideas for the future. Now we’re turning that vision into action by updating Nassau County’s Comprehensive Plan — the roadmap for decision-making about housing, transportation, schools, utilities, and more through 2050. This updated plan will help us manage growth responsibly while protecting the character and natural assets that make Nassau County special. Your voice matters. Learn how you can get involved and help plan for a safe, healthy, and sustainable future.

News & Updates
Following the County’s annual Winter Strategic Planning Session, work on the Comprehensive Plan is moving forward with a clear focus on translating the recently completed 2050 Vision into actionable goals, objectives, and policies. During the session, staff and consultants outlined projected growth trends through 2050, highlighting increasing pressure to convert rural lands into suburban development. Recognizing the County’s strong commitment to preserving its rural character for economic, cultural, and environmental reasons, the Board engaged in a detailed discussion on potential strategies to guide future growth. These included tools such as urban and rural boundaries, service area agreements, and transfer of development rights programs, often most effective when used in combination. Commissioners also considered how these approaches have performed in other communities and what they could mean for local residents. As discussions continue, the Board will provide further direction to shape a balanced approach to growth and rural preservation as part of the Comprehensive Plan update.
